Sacraments and rites

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark has two sacraments: baptism and the Eucharist. The Eucharist is celebrated at most Sunday services and at other church services too. Baptism often takes place during the Sunday service; both children and adults are baptised. In addition to the two sacraments we have three rites: confirmation, wedding and funeral.

 

Baptism

In baptism, we receive a blessing and we hear the promise of God to all His children.

 

Confirmation

Confirmation means "saying yes". In the confirmation God's promise to the individual made at baptism is confirmed. 

 

Funeral

A funeral is a rite where we take leave of the deceased and listen to the Christian message of resurrection, hope and comfort.

 

Eucharist

In the Eucharist we have communion with Christ and hear the proclamation of the forgiveness of sin.

 

Marriage

A church wedding differs from a civil wedding in that it includes God's blessing of the couple, prayers, hymns and Bible readings.
